SUMMARY:March 2014 Columbia Section Meeting - Pasco Processing Center Wastewater Reuse System Optimization
DESCRIPTION:This month we welcome Tim McGuire\, Senior Engineer with Cascade Earth Sciences to O’Callahan’s in the Shilo Inn in Richland. \nHow do you fix a multi-user process wastewater land treatment system near capacity to enable more food processing and more processors? The City of Pasco is solving system capacity limitations by applying practical engineering\, agronomy\, and irrigation design to improve pre-treatment\, operations\, and farm management. The City of Pasco (City) treats and reuses the process wastewater produced by four food processors by applying it to agricultural crops grown on the City’s land treatment fields. This presentation will showcase a 20 year old centralized land treatment operation including financial aspects for the processors and the City\, and show the pretreatment construction and planning solutions to improve and expand wastewater reuse. \nRegister at the following link:  http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=tpugxclab&oeidk=a07e93j7tp1eb4999e8 \n

SUMMARY:February 2014 Columbia Section Meeting - 618-10 Vertical Pipe Unit Retrieval Design
DESCRIPTION:This month we welcome Kim Koegler with Washington Closure Hanford to O’Callahan’s in the Shilo Inn at Richland. \nWashington Closure Hanford\, as the contractor to the U.S. Department of Energy on the River Corridor Closure Contract\, is charged with the remediation of Vertical Pipe Units at the 618-10 and 618-11 Burial Grounds. VPUs were one of the methods used for waste disposal at Hanford Site during the 1960’s. The first generation of VPUs was simply pipes\, 10- to 12-in diameter and 10- to 15-ft long\, buried vertically. The second generation of VPUs was 22-in diameter\, 15-ft long waste receptacles constructed by welding five 55-gallon bottomless drums together end-to-end and burying them vertically\, separated by approximately 10 feet on center. The 618-10 Burial Ground contains approximately 94 VPUs (uncertain mix of first and second generation). The 618-11 Burial Ground contains 50 VPUs (all second generation). \nThe 618-10 and -11 Burial Grounds received low- to high-activity waste (e.g.\, fission products and some plutonium-contaminated waste). Most of the waste originated at the 300 Area laboratory facilities. Historical documents indicate that shielding materials (i.e.\, concrete and soil) were added to the VPUs\, as necessary\, to reduce dose rates over the openings.  Historical documents also indicate that the VPUs were backfilled with sand and capped with concrete after the VPUs stopped receiving waste\, and were covered with approximately 2-ft of soil when they were closed.  An additional 2-ft of topsoil was later added to each site for surface stabilization. \nA design for VPU remediation has been developed and is being refined through full-scale mockup methods testing. This presentation will provide an overview of the VPU challenges and the remediation design. \nRegister here:  http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=tpugxclab&oeidk=a07e8skna9gab29fef9

SUMMARY:Yakima Branch Meeting - Bechtel Vitrification Plant
DESCRIPTION:The Vitrification Plant at Hanford \nPresentation Overview: \nBechtel – Hanford Vit Plant \nWe are excited to have Mr. Nelson and Mr. Theriault speak at this month’s meeting about one of the largest clean-up projects in the world.  Last year we had a presentation on the project by Dan McDonald with the Department of Ecology.  This year we are able to hear how the project is progressing directly from Bechtel. \nPresenter Backgrounds \nTodd Nelson is external affairs manager for Bechtel National’s Waste Treatment Plant Project in Richland. He grew up in the Tri-Cities and has worked at Hanford most of his career and for Bechtel for the last 13 years. \nPhillippe Theriault is civil\, structural and architectural engineering group supervisor for the Low Activity Waste Vitrification Facility. He has worked for Bechtel for six years and also worked for Canam Steel Corp. in Sunnyside. \nProject Background (from the Bechtel Fact Sheet) \nSee the link here for more information:  http://www.hanfordvitplant.com/uploads/docs/overview_factsheet1.pdf \nThe Hanford Site\, located in southeastern Washington state\, was the largest of three defense production sites in the U.S.  Over the span of 40 years\, it was used to produce 64 metric tons of plutonium\, helping end World War II and playing a major role in military defense efforts during the Cold War. As a result\, 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical wastes are now stored in 177 underground tanks on the Hanford Site. \nTo address this challenge\, the U.S. Department of Energy contracted Bechtel National\, Inc.\, to design and build the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant.  The Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP)\, also known as the “Vit Plant\,” will use vitrification to immobilize most of Hanford’s dangerous tank waste.  Vitrification involves blending the waste with molten glass\, heating it to high temperatures\, then pouring it into stainless steel canisters. In this glass form\, the waste is stable and impervious to the environment\, and its radioactivity will dissipate over hundreds to thousands of years. \nThe WTP will cover 65 acres with four nuclear facilities – Pretreatment\, High-Level Waste Vitrification\, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification and an Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings\, utilities and office space. Site preparation began in October 2001\, and the concrete for the first nuclear facility’s foundation was placed in July 2002. \nThe Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP)\, also known as the Vit Plant\, will eliminate the environmental threat posed by 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste currently stored at the Hanford Site.

SUMMARY:September 2013 Columbia Section Meeting-Habitat for Humanity 101
DESCRIPTION:This month we welcome Rick Jansons\, the new Executive Director for the Tri-County Partners Habitat for Humanity.  Rick was previously a nuclear industry consultant with over 25 years in the industry and has served on numerous local boards\, such as the Richland School District Board\, Leadership Tri-Cities\, and Richland Rotary.  He has also served as President of Washington Agriculture and Forestry Education Foundation\, Chair of the Tank Waste Committee\, and Vice-Chair of the Hanford Advisory Board.  We’re probably all familiar with with what Habitat for Humanity does\, but seldom get to see the results of their projects first hand.  Rick will give us an update on the recent\, current\, and upcoming HfH projects in the Tri-Cities

SUMMARY:April Columbia Section Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Structural Analysis of the Core Performance in Liquid Metal Nuclear Reactors\nHow do you measure structural performance in liquid metal nuclear reactors? It’s not your conventional civil/structural engineering analysis because of the change in material properties with respect to time\, temperature\, and neutron flux. The FFTF reactor is an example of a liquid metal nuclear reactor. Please join us as local WSU PhD candidate Julie Dewberry discusses this very challenging topic.
